Barrel Bungs by Sumermex
A barrel bung or bung is used to seal oak barrels in winemaking to vary the color, flavor, tannin profile and texture of wine. Oak can be introduced in the form of a barrel during the fermentation or aging periods, or as free-floating chips or staves added to wine fermented in a vessel like stainless steel. Oak barrels can impart other qualities to wine through evaporation and low level exposure to oxygen.
Every barrel bung by Subermex is made of the highest quality material available. We use only 100 % FDA grade silicone in our manufacturing processes. Our barrel bungs are engineered for premium sealing capabilities, durability and longevity.
Other facts
Wine barrels with bungs: Some wines are fermented "on barrel", as opposed to in a neutral container such as a steel or wine-grade HDPE (high density polyethylene). Wine can also be fermented in large wooden tanks, which—when open to the atmosphere—are called "open-tops". Other wooden cooperage for storing wine or spirits range from smaller barriques to huge casks, with either elliptical or round heads.
